Physiotherapist

He/Him

Steve has over 25 years of experience working as a Physiotherapist in Vancouver. He earned a Masters of Physiotherapy degree from McMaster University and holds an Advanced Diploma in Manual and Manipulative therapy, the highest certification available to Physiotherapists practicing in Orthopaedics. He is certified in Intramuscular Stimulation, Acupuncture and Craniosacral Therapy. His practice also incorporates his training in Connect Therapy. This training has given him the tools to assess clients as a whole to establish the root cause of symptoms in the body. He is then able to focus treatment on areas of the body which will provide symptom relief and recovery as quickly as possible.

Through his own injuries from running, swimming, playing soccer and snowboarding, he has developed a special interest in foot and knee injuries plus in treating persistent pain. For those with longstanding pain, he incorporates a technique called Pain Reprocessing Therapy. Pain reprocessing therapy involves a series of psychological techniques which rely on the brain’s ability to rewire from a state of high alert to a more regulated state of calm. This along with nervous system regulating techniques allow persistent symptoms to reduce and in many cases fully resolve. He regularly teaches other Physiotherapists these techniques to apply in their practices. Please see this article on Pain Reprocessing for more information.

He considers it a true privilege to partner with people through their healing journey and to see them reach their highest possible level of function.

What are your top skills as a physiotherapist?

I specialize in selecting the most effective tools for each individual and accurately identifying the root cause of symptoms. This process begins with a comprehensive full-body movement assessment to pinpoint areas of dysfunction. Based on the findings, I draw from a wide range of treatment options—including soft tissue therapy, joint mobilization, Intramuscular Stimulation, acupuncture, and gentle Craniosacral Therapy—to release restrictions and restore optimal movement. Once mobility is improved, we transition to targeted exercises designed to reinforce healthy movement patterns and provide lasting symptom relief.

What kind of approach do you take with clients?

I specialize in treating persistent pain conditions using Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)—a set of evidence-based psychological techniques that help retrain the brain to shift from a state of heightened alert to one of safety and calm. By harnessing the brain’s ability to rewire itself, PRT, combined with nervous system regulation techniques, can significantly reduce—and often fully resolve—chronic symptoms. In these cases, I also find Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) and Craniosacral Therapy to be highly effective in supporting the healing process.

In addition to my work with persistent pain, I have a particular passion for treating knee and foot injuries, and have pursued advanced, specialized training in these areas to provide the most effective care.

How would a friend describe you?

I’m often described as a family-oriented, compassionate, and outgoing person with a strong passion for both coaching and soccer.

What drew you to this profession?

My interest in Physiotherapy began in elementary school, when I found myself drawn to helping a friend improve their walking pattern while they were managing a medical condition. I also saw the benefits of Physiotherapy through the recovery of several soccer injuries when I was younger.

What lights you up about the work you do?

I find deep fulfillment in seeing people regain their health and return to the activities they love. I often catch myself saying, “That’s great to hear you’re feeling better—this just made my day!”

What motivates you in patient care?

I have a strong interest in learning how to age well—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and find it deeply rewarding to support others on this journey, as I continue along my own path toward lifelong wellness

Can you share some highlights in your background or training?

I hold a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy from McMaster University and an Advanced Diploma in Manual and Manipulative Therapy—the highest certification available to physiotherapists practicing in orthopaedics. I am also certified in Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), Acupuncture, and Craniosacral Therapy, and have completed training in ConnectTherapy™. This comprehensive background allows me to assess the body as an integrated whole and identify the root cause of symptoms, rather than simply addressing isolated issues.

What's something people might not expect about you?

I love to play the guitar and cello.

Where can we find you when you're not at the clinic?

Kayaking in English bay, playing soccer or baseball with my boys or walking in Vanier Park with my wife.

What are your non-negotiable heath/wellness practices or rituals?

Morning quiet time to reflect, pray and drink good coffee. My walk to and from work and weekend activities with my family.
