Mobilization of the Myofascial System (MMS): Lower Quadrant

Have you ever had a clinical case you believe to be of primary nociceptive pain, but no matter what you have tried in your tool-kit so far, it hasn’t had a positive effect? Or had patients complain of multiple areas of pain that don’t correspond to the paradigms that we are familiar with? Perhaps you are missing the fascial component, an often overlooked tissue category that may contribute to persistent musculoskeletal pain.  Fascia is innervated, making it a potential pain generator. It also has a strong mechanical presence that can restrict mobility if not addressed.
 

What does a patient with Fascial dysfunction look like?  A patient with fascial dysfunction may say “I feel tension in my leg overall, as if I am wearing a twisted pair of pantyhose,” or “I feel like my skin is too tight,” or they may have pain that is deep, dull, and aching. You may find difficulty maintaining treatment effects or note recurring dysfunction. Or you may notice that when you test joint mobility or muscle length it appears normal, but you see limitations in functional movements. In this case we may then ask ourselves if this “articular” dysfunction is perhaps connected elsewhere along a fascial line, which may be a contributing factor to its recurrence.

Fascia is stepping out of the anatomical shadows to become a frontline clinical priority. Recent research reveals it is a vital sensory organ that transmits muscular force and integrates with the nervous system. Despite its impact on mobility and musculoskeletal dysfunction, many clinicians lack advanced fascia training. Mobilization of the Myofascial System (MMS) provides physical therapists with evidence-based techniques to effectively treat this vital tissue.
